DeafHear.ie (formally the National Association for the Deaf) was established in 1964. It is a charitable not-for-profit organisation and is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors. Below is an outline of the organisation’s structure and a list of key contacts.

DeafHear Chairman | Declan Keane

Declan Keane is the parent of a Deaf child and served two terms on the Board of Management of St. Joseph’s School for Deaf Boys in Cabra. He is a chartered accountant and is a partner in KPMG.

Declan joined the Board of DeafHear in 2009.

DeafHear Board Member | Gerard Smith

 

Gerard Smith is a Hard of Hearing person and is a past pupil of St. Joseph’s School for Deaf Boys, Cabra. In 2008, Gerard graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Management and Information Systems.

Gerard is CEO of Translingual.ie – A translation and interpreting service.

He joined Deaf Hear Board of Directors in March 2013.

DeafHear Board Member | Joan McCarville

Joan McCarville is profoundly Deaf and attended mainstream school.

She is a qualified Aural Rehabilitation tutor. Joan works in finance in CDETB.

She joined the Board of DeafHear in 2005.

DeafHear Board Member | Brian Symington MBE

Brian Symington has been at the forefront of service development for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people for more than 40 years.

Brian has held Senior Management positions in both the statutory and voluntary sectors and was Northern Ireland Director of RNID (Action on Hearing Loss) from 1991 – 2011.

Until recently Brian has been Hon Secretary and Board member of the European Society on Mental Health and Deafness and a part time consultant at Jordanstown School for Deaf and Visually Impaired children. As President of the World Congress on Mental Health and Deafness he organised a very successful congress in Belfast in 2014. This led to him being the recipient of the Belfast Ambassador of the Year Award. He continues to advise government on public policy in Northern Ireland.

He was awarded an MBE in 2002 for service to Deaf people.

Brian joined the Board of DeafHear in October 2012.

DeafHear Board Member | Niall P. Glynn

Niall P. Glynn is a Specialist HR Business Consultant & Executive Coach and Mentor with over 25 years experience in HR management and business solutions.

He graduated with a HR Management Degree and he also holds a Masters Degree from the IMI in Executive Coaching. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers in Ireland.

In 2010, he set up Niall Glynn & Associates Limited to provide a HR Business Consultancy service delivering business solutions to SMEs. He also provides mentoring for Wicklow, Dun Laoghaire, South Dublin & Meath Local Enterprise Offices.

Niall joined the Board of DeafHear in June 2012.

DeafHear Vice Chairman | Dr. Paul Ryan

A Civil Servant with over 20 years experience in a variety of Departments, Dr. Paul Ryan currently works in the Department of Finance where he has responsibility for Corporate and Financial Affairs.

He also worked in the Department of Education & Science where he had experience of teacher training and professional development issues, including responsibility for training for Teachers of the Deaf and the Visiting Teachers Service.

Paul joined the Board of DeafHear in May 2010.

DeafHear Board Member | Sylvia Nolan



Sylvia Nolan is the Manager of Deaf Village Ireland.

She is fluent in Irish Sign Language and is involved in the Deaf Community.

Sylvia was formerly the Director of Care for St Mary’s Residence for Deaf Girls, Cabra since 2003.

Sylvia is on the Board of DeafHear since May 2005.

DeafHear Board Member | Sandra Creagh

Sandra Creagh is a teacher in the Post–Primary section of St. Mary’s School for Deaf Girls, Cabra.

She is a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and recently completed a Diploma in Educational Audiology.

She is a Local Facilitator for the Special Education Support Service where she is involved in the design and presentation of seminars in the area of Deaf Education.

Sandra joined the Board of Directors in July 2013.

Mid West Resource Centre

Siohhan Egan is the team leader of the Mid West team, which covers Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. Siobhan carries her team leader responsibilities in addition to her professional role as Family Resource Officer.

Dublin South Resource Centre

Martina Joyce is the team leader in of the Dublin South team, which covers Dublin South, Dublin West, Wicklow and Kildare. Martina is a Community Resource Officer and also offers Tinnitus Retraining Therapy support. Martina carries the responsibility of team leader in addition to her professional role.

DeafHear North East Resource Centre Sandra Ivory  

North East Resource Centre

Sandra Ivory is the Regional Manager responsible for the North East team, based in Dundalk and covering Louth, Meath, Monaghan and Cavan. In Dundalk, the team is co-located with the NCBI Visual Impairment team in the North East Sensory Resource Centre. Sandra has responsibility for administrative management of the national Mental Health & Deafness team.

West Resource Centre

Seamus Moore is team leader with responsibility for managing the Western team, serving counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. The team is based in the Galway Sensory Resource Centre in a premises shared with the NCBI Visual Impairment Team. Seamus carries the team leader responsibilities in addition to his professional role as Social Worker for the Deaf.
