Irish Film Institute Accessible Cinemas Launch

Posted: 12th May 2016 Irish Film Institute Accessible Cinemas’ Launch 2016, Irish comedy film Sing Street.

Earlier this year the Irish Film Institute began a new accessibility initiative in its cinema complex on Eustace Street, Dublin 2. This included screenings with audio description for people with sight difficulties and subtitled screenings for people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Next week, on Thursday May 19th at 6.30pm they will have an official launch of their accessible cinemas. The launch event will include speech to text and Irish Sign Language interpretation, and will be followed by a screening of the hilarious Irish comedy film Sing Street. If you would like to attend the launch, contact Shauna Lyons at the Irish Film Institute by 5.00pm on Friday May 13th:

Each cinema in the Irish Film Institute’s complex includes an induction loop and there will be regular screenings with subtitles (open captios) and audio description. A welcome aspect of these screenings is that it will include shows at peak times, something which does not always happen in other cinema complexes. The Irish Filim Institute’s accessibility initiative is supported by the Arts Council in partnership with Arts and Disability Ireland.

The Irish Film Institute’s website and their printed programmes will use the AD (Audio Described) and OC (Open Captioned) symbols to indicate accessible screenings. You can also keep up to date with accessible screenings by visiting their website at

Media Contacts will provide spokespersons to comment on issues relevant to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people on request.
