Deaf girl teaches her deaf puppy sign language!

Posted: 14th July 2016

A heartwarming video of a 10 year old Deaf girl teaching teaching her dog sign language has touched people within the Deaf Community and beyond in the US. The story was reported by CBS news in the US, and the Hearing Times in the UK. Julia and her 7–month–old puppy Walter became best friends the minute they met.

Walter was the last dog in his litter to get adopted from the Pasadena Humane Society in California, in the United States. But there was something about him that Julia’s mum Chrissy knew made him a perfect fit for her daughter. Both Julia and Walter were born deaf.

Chrissy says that when she was a baby, Julia used to smell her neck as she could not hear her voice – and when she first held Walter, he did the same thing. “I remember just looking at him, and I knew that he was meant to be ours” Chrissy said.

“He was initially overlooked by people who were not looking for a dog that couldn’t hear,” Jamie Holeman of the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA told CBS News. Now Julia is teaching her terrier–chihuahua mix a whole new way to communicate. She uses signs to teach Walter how to sit, ask for food and respond to his name.
