There is an impressive list of speakers for the upcoming Deaf Education Conference in Portlaoise on October 1st next. Among them is Dr Marc Marschark, a leading researcher and commentator on Deaf Education worldwide.

Dr Marschark is a Professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a faculty of Rochester Institute of Technology in New York State, where he directs the Center for Education Research Partnerships.

His primary interest is in relations of language, learning, and cognition among deaf children and adults in formal and informal educational settings.

Marc founded and now co–edits the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education and co–edits the Perspectives on Deafness and Professional Perspectives on Deafness: Evidence and Applications series, all published by Oxford University Press.

His more than 30 books written and edited with colleagues include Raising and Educating a Deaf Child, How Deaf Children Learn, and Teaching Deaf Learners: Psychological and Developmental Foundations.

He currently is engaged in a five–year project into language (signed, spoken, read), learning (formal and informal), and cognition (e.g., visual–spatial, social, memory) among hearing students, deaf students with cochlear implants, and deaf students without cochlear implants.

“We’re changing the face of deaf education around the world,” says Dr. Marc Marschark, professor and director of NTID’s Center for Education Research Partnerships (CERP).

“You can’t teach deaf kids as though they are hearing kids who can’t hear. It’s not about ears and it’s not about speech versus sign language. It’s about finding their strengths and needs. The historical approach to deaf education simply doesn’t work well enough to get deaf students where they need to be.”

Other speakers at the conference include:

Dr Pól Bond, Ireland.
Dr John Bosco Conama, Ireland.
Senator Mark Daly, Ireland.
Dr Margaret du Feu, Ireland.
Dr Claudia Gordon, United States.
