Information Weekend for Families with
Children Newly Diagnosed with a Hearing Loss

Updated: 20th February 2017

DeafHear Friday 7th October to Sunday ? 9th October 2016

Unfortunately we have taken the decision to cancel the Newly Diagnosed Weekend in March.

This is because we did not have enough families booked in to generate the atmosphere of sharing and peer support which are the key components of the weekend.

In March 2017, DeafHear.ie will host its bi-annual information weekend for families with children who have been newly diagnosed with a hearing loss. The previous weekends were a great success and the feedback from the families that attended was extremely positive, some of these comments can be seen on our website www.deafhear.ie. While visiting the website please take the opportunity to look at our Parents Corner information which has specifically for parents.

Parents who attended in October 2016 said…

“More than I expected, I loved how everyone is so friendly.”

“Clear sharing of information in layman's terms. Never lost in the details.”
“Exceeded expectations, I just loved it and feel so much better.” “A very good overview and introduction to the supports available in the future.”

The weekend will bring families from across the country together, to give you the opportunity to gain information about supports available locally and nationally from professionals and peers.

The weekend will be led by experienced DeafHear staff. In attendance will be relevant professionals, all of whom have a vast amount of experience working with children with a hearing loss. There will also be a session with a panel of families who have a child with hearing loss, they speak about their experiences growing up in a hearing family. There will also be ample opportunities to talk to other families and DeafHear staff.

We are pleased to offer children aged 14 years and under the chance to take part in a wide range of activities in age-appropriate childcare rooms run by trained and experienced childcare workers, while parents participate in the sessions.

The weekend is residential to enable families to share their experiences
in a supportive and confidential environment.

The Portlaoise Heritage Hotel is in Portlaoise Town, ideally located only 1 hour from Dublin, 1.5 hours from Cork and just 5 minutes' walk from Portlaoise Train Station. The hotel offers a number of family rooms (limited to 4 family members ? a supplement may be incurred if additional accommodation is required), residents also have access to a fitness suite and swimming pool.

The cost of attending the weekend is €70 per adult (16 and over) and €40 per child (under 16) for the weekend. All accommodation, meals, information pack and children?s activities will be provided by DeafHear. If you would like to participate in this weekend, please complete the booking form and return by Friday 17th February 2017, or if you would like more information please contact:
