Good Luck to Caroline in the
Mary of Dungloe Pageant!

Posted: 4th August 2017

This year the Mary of Dungloe International pageant celebrates 50 years.  Caroline McGrotty, a prominent member of the Deaf Community, one of the RTÉ’s Deaf News signing presenters and a native of Dungloe, will represent Dublin in the 2017 festival.

DeafHear Good Luck to Caroline in the Mary of Dungloe Pageant!Caroline is living and working in Dublin at the moment, but she has always wanted to enter the competition as a child and took the plunge this year.

She will be the first Deaf lady ever to enter this event. One of Caroline’s main reasons for entering was to open the pageant up to the Deaf Community and make it accessible in Irish Sign Language.

Caroline comes from a Deaf family and attended St Marys School for Deaf Girls in Cabra. After school she attended the Centre for Deaf Studies in Trinity, graduating with a degree in Deaf Studies and a Diploma in Irish Sign Language teaching.

She is currently employed as a Project Co-ordinator for AHEAD – the Association for Higher Education and Disability.

Apart from her busy job, Caroline is heavily involved in the Deaf Community. Some of her voluntary roles to date include Chairperson of the Donegal Deaf Club,  Board member of Deaf Village Ireland, chairperson of the Irish Deaf Youth

Association (IDYA), and Vice–Chairperson of the Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS).

The Mary of Dungloe Festival runs from 29th July – 7th August with a jam–packed schedule including walkabouts in Letterkenny, visiting the local hospital and participating in many fun festival activities.

Many of Caroline’s Deaf friends will travel to Donegal to support her and enjoy the accessible festivities with ISL interpretation.

DeafHear would like to take this opportunity to wish
Caroline well in the competition.

We know she will do us all proud!
