DeafHear welcomes the long awaited publication by the National Council for Special Education

DeafHearDeafHear welcomes the long awaited publication by the National Council for Special Education on February 3rd of the policy advice paper on Deaf education: ´The Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in Ireland´. In launching the policy advice paper, the NCSE´s press statement succinctly acknowledges the problems in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children to date, and highlights the key solutions as follows:

´The significance of today´s paper is highlighted by the findings of a key study in the US, which suggests that the level of reading for 17-18 year olds who are Deaf and hard of hearing is the same as that of hearing children aged 9. However, with effective early intervention and skilled teaching, the average language and early reading skills of young children with a hearing loss has been found to be similar to hearing children´.

Parents, teachers and Deaf organisations have been waiting a long time for this report (to access a copy see below). DeafHear looks forward to playing its part in ensuring that Deaf and Hard of Hearing children are provided with an education service into the future that enables them to attain an education on a par with their hearing peers. We are in full agreement with the NCSE policy advice paper that quality early intervention support and skilled teaching are the key ingredients in achieving this vision.
