Important National Conference for Parents

DeafHear.ieThe Connect, Learn, Share Conference is aimed at providing parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children with up–to–date information on best practice in family support programmes. The conference is also relevant to professionals working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and their parents. Leading international experts from the US and Europe will make presentations on early intervention and family support programmes, and facilitate practical workshops for parents. Key objectives of the conference are to highlight the critically important role of parents in supporting their children’s development and to provide practical knowledge and skills to support parents in fulfilling this role to the best of their ability.


The speakers include:

Gwen Carr,
Gwen is Deputy Director of the England NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme and Hon. Senior Research Associate at the University College London Ear Institute. She co-led a government study Informed Choice, Families and Deaf Children leading to the production of national guidance for professionals and a comprehensive handbook for parents. Gwen Carr

Dinah Beames,
Dinah is the Programme Coordinator for the Colorado Home Intervention Program (CHIP) with the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. Responsibilities in this position include coordinating services for families with newly-diagnosed Deaf children; training professionals; and curriculum and programme development. Dinah Beames

Aishling Heffernan,
Aisling is a Speech & Language Therapy Manager and is Programme Manager for the National Clinical Programme for Audiology. She has previously project managed service developments within the rehabilitative services setting and is responsible for the roll-out of Newborn Hearing Screening in Ireland. Aishling Heffernan

Terhi Kyllikki Rissanen,
Terhi is a principal lecturer in Diaconia University of Applied Sciences in Turku, Finland and is a former Teacher of the Deaf in Turku Christian College. She is a specialist in language development and the mother of three adult children, two of whom were born Deaf. Terhi Kyllikki Rissanen
