Young Guns Sign Up!

DeafHear DAHATThe Rathmore Community School 4th year transition students contacted DeafHear.ie Killarney in October last year with an interest to doing a basic sign language and Deaf Awareness course as one of their transition year projects.
Shane Hamilton – Community Recourse Office/ Sign Language tutor was delighted to teach and lecture on all things related to Deaf issues.
The students learnt all sorts of signs in relation to greetings, weather, transport, direction etc.
Last February, they underwent the examination and all have successfully passed with flying colours despite their hands shaking with nerves!

They also participated in a half day Deaf Awareness Training to experience what it is like to live in a silent world. One of the topics they enjoyed was the Deaf Culture and how Deaf people interact with the hearing world.

“I really enjoyed learning a new language and now I know that I can communicate with someone who is deaf if I need to. I learned a lot about the Deaf community and how they interact with the hearing world.”
