DeafHear: Technology makes ordering a burger easier @ McDonalds!

For many Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, ordering food in a restaurant can be a nightmare! Apart from all those funny named dishes with ingredients we may never have heard of, the potential for misunderstandings and embarrassment when ordering food can be enough to deter some people from going to the restaurant in the first place! However, could technology be the answer?

Recently DeafHear’s Annie Murphy was in Poland, and on her way home at the airport she was surprised to find that a new automated system for ordering food had been installed in McDonald’s restaurant. With this new technology, ordering food becomes much easier for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people… as no communication with staff is required. And of course the technology also benefits anyone who might not be familiar with the local language.

Although this was Annie’s first time to see this technology in a McDonald’s restaurant, our local McDonald fans tell us that a number have been installed in Ireland… including O’Connell St. in Dublin and in Kilkenny! Click on the video to find out how Annie got on:
